A businessman in Sutton Coldfield faces demolition of his unauthorized home extension after neighbors protested its size and impact on the neighborhood. The case highlights tensions between property rights and community standards.

A businessman in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, has been ordered to demolish a large extension on his £415,000 home after neighbors complained about its size and appearance.

Mani Singh, a father of two, built the 3-meter-high grey structure without planning permission, sparking outrage among his neighbors. The extension, which includes a dormer, loft conversion, and skylights, has been described as an 'ugly eyesore' that disrupts the character of the quiet suburban neighborhood. Neighbors, including Liz Deakin, 63, who has lived on the street for 35 years, and Cath Tandy, 75, have voiced their concerns about the extension blocking sunlight and invading their privacy.

Deakin compared the structure to a 'football director's box,' deeming it inappropriate for the area. Tandy, whose home is directly behind Singh's property, likened the situation to 'being in a prison exercise yard,' noting the loss of evening sunlight in her garden. Despite initially applying for planning permission, Singh was denied and later built the extension without approval. The neighbors took their complaints to Walsall Council, even hiring a minibus to attend a council meeting in person.

While a planning officer initially recommended approval, the council ultimately rejected the extension, citing violations of planning laws. Singh now has six months to demolish the dormer or appeal the decision. The case has sparked a debate about homeowners' rights to modify their properties and the balance between personal freedom and community harmony
