Steven Wilson, a career criminal who received a £5.5 million payout after being stabbed in prison, has admitted his fortune has become a curse, squandering half on drugs, luxury, and reckless spending. His brother warns he may follow the path of a notorious lottery loser.
A serial burglar who received a £5.5 million compensation payout from taxpayers after being stabbed in prison has described his fortune as a curse, admitting he has squandered half of it on a drug-fueled lifestyle.
Steven Wilson, a career criminal with over 30 convictions, successfully sued the Ministry of Justice following a brutal attack in which he was stabbed 16 times by a fellow inmate at HMP Chelmsford in 2018. The attack left him with severe injuries, including a torn liver, fractured spine, and lacerated spinal cord, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), rendering him unable to work.
Despite the life-changing sum, Wilson has spiraled into a destructive cycle of excessive spending, blowing tens of thousands on cocaine, luxury hotel stays, and lavish nights out with a rotating group of so-called friends. His brother, David Wilson, has expressed deep concern, warning that Steven could follow the tragic path of Mickey Carroll, a notorious lottery winner who died penniless after blowing his £9.7 million jackpot on a decade of reckless spending.
David revealed that Steven has already spent over half of his compensation on cars, jewelry, and gifts for friends, while struggling with the pressures of his newfound wealth. He has been harassed, robbed, and swindled by former associates, forcing him to relocate to a £340,000 bungalow on the east coast for safety. Despite his financial windfall, Wilson has barely seen his only daughter since receiving the payout, further deepening his family’s despair.
David lamented that the money has only exacerbated his brother’s struggles, pulling him back into a dangerous lifestyle rather than offering a fresh start. The case raises questions about the long-term impact of large compensation payouts on individuals with troubled pasts, highlighting the challenges of managing sudden wealth without proper support systems
