The Dothan Chamber held its Small Business Awards to honor entrepreneurs who took risks to open businesses in the city.
“The thing about small businesses is that they are willing to take a risk that drives our diversity funding,” said Michael Smith, market president of Five Star Credit Union. Kristien Pierce, owner of The Growth Agency, said she was shocked when she won the Emerging Business Award.
“It was absolute shock. I had no idea. I had a little bit of, ‘oh my gosh, I’m going to pass out’ moment, but it was surreal. I still feel like this is a dream,” Pierce said.
“I had a great vision of what that looked like. And so I’ve been able to take what my parents taught and took that with me now. And here I am owning my own business and thriving,” she said.
“It matters to me because without the small businesses here, the big box stores would take over and the hometown people would just be ran out,” Hamilton said. “It’s family. It’s South Alabama. It’s who we are,” Smith said.
Four businesses were honored: The Growth Agency, W. Jones Photography, Prim and Mendheim Attorneys and Toyota of Dothan.
