Nurses are speaking out after the Trump Administration proposed to reclassify nursing degrees.
One Big Beautiful Bill no longer classifies nursing along with many other professions as a professional degree .Horton worries that the reclassification is a concern for nurses trying to advance their nursing career s.
However, the press secretary for higher education said 95% of nursing students are in programs that will not be affected by the new caps, adding that graduate nursing students will still be eligible to borrow up to $100,000 in federal student loans for their graduate programs. Horton said students who are seeking a professional degree in medicine or pharmacy can receive up to double that. Horton wanted to be clear that her statements are her opinion only, and not a reflection of her employer.“That can affect the ability for students, nurses to go back to school for those master’s and doctorate degrees when we have a shortage of nurses throughout the country, so that is a concern,” Horton said.“Without the student loans and funding that I received as a student, I would not have been able to go back and get my master’s degree and my doctorate in nursing education, so it’s really important that we speak out and share our experiences,” Horton said.“I think we have a lot of invisible work that we do as nurses. It’s so important that we actually start showing people the work behind the scenes. I think that will increase the appreciation for the profession of nursing more so than it already is,” Horton said. Horton adds that they are encouraging members to sign a petition to add nursing back to the professional degree list.
