High-speed chases, drugs thrown from moving cars and deputies with guns drawn — it’s happening on the same roads drivers use every day in Portage County.

PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio — High-speed chases, drugs thrown from moving cars and deputies with guns drawn — it’s happening on the same roads drivers use every day in Portage County.

“The Portage Aggressive Crime Enforcement team,” said Deputy Dale Murray of the Portage County Sheriff’s Office. On April 22 the unit confiscated over half a pound of fentanyl while patrolling the Ohio Turnpike. Murray said they recently found four pounds of meth hidden inside the backs of car seats in a rental car. Deputies said they find drugs in one out of every 30 cars they pull over.

With Portage County being a hub to major cities, they focus on the freeways and turnpike, tuning in to suspicious driving behaviors. This year alone, the team has confiscated 200 grams of fentanyl, over 12,000 grams of marijuana and 1,800 grams of meth. Dashcam videos obtained by 19 Investigates show what can happen when a regular traffic stop turns into a high-speed chase. In March of last year, Deputy Murray tried stopping a car on the turnpike.

Speeds quickly exceeded 100 miles an hour as Murray spotted something flying out of the car’s window.

“He just threw more, it looked like white rocks,” Murray said. “Looked like a decent amount that time. ”“Show me your hands right now,” Murray said.

“Put your hands on the back of my car, don’t move. Put your hands behind your back. ”He was sentenced to 15 months in prison, but a judge released him in February. His driver’s license was suspended for three years.

It then sped away. Deputies said the driver was 45-year-old James Frymyer, who had 10 felony warrants out of Summit County. About a minute into the pursuit, Frymyer stopped to let a woman out, then kept going. For eight minutes he tried losing Paolucci, driving towards oncoming traffic and passing semis on the left shoulder.

He finally came to a stop in Akron. Officers used a less-lethal rifle to blow out the car’s window.

“I’m going to throw a bomb in there. Can someone cover me as I go up? Put your hands up! Put your hands up!

Out of the car! ” Deputies can be heard yelling on dashcam video.

“Hands up, put your hands up, hands up! On the ground! Do it now! On the ground!

Do it now! Get on the ground,” a deputy said. Officers inspected the vehicle and found 10 grams of meth hidden in a magnetic box under the driver seat. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

His driver’s license was suspended for four years.
