with a suspect, new video released Wednesday shows the injured K9 on the mend, walking with a protective boot and carrying a purple toy, seemingly unfazed despite losing a toe in the chaos.

The footage, taken by Dollars for Dogs, Inc., offers an encouraging update on APD K9 Kiska, whose injury drew an outpouring of concern after authorities said he was struck by gunfire during a confrontation with a fleeing suspect early April 15. In the video released Wednesday, Kiska appears energetic and upbeat, jaunting around with a toy in his mouth while wearing a boot on the injured foot.

Though the dog’s wound was serious enough to cost him a toe, the injury appears to have done little to dampen his spirit.that unfolded after Anchorage police responded around 3:30 a.m. April 15 to a report of a stolen vehicle. According to police, the vehicle’s owner told dispatch they had found it occupied at the Circle K on Spenard Road and followed it to the area of West 34th Avenue and Eureka Street, where officers tried to block it in.

Police said two people got out of the vehicle. A woman was arrested at the scene without incident, while a man ran, triggering a foot chase. West 34th Avenue and Bering Street, where police said the suspect exchanged gunfire with four Anchorage officers. The man was struck multiple times and taken to a local hospital with injuries police said were believed to be life-threatening.

Kiska was also hit by gunfire and taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment. No officers were struck. At a news conference following the shooting, Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case was asked whether the dog would eventually return to service.

“There’s a few different questions that we have to answer before we can determine whether or not the dog will be back in service,” Case said. For now, Wednesday’s video suggests the popular police dog is focused less on that question and more on recovery. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Under department policy, Alaska’s Office of Special Prosecutions will review the officers’ use of force to determine whether it was justified.

After that review is complete, APD Internal Affairs will examine whether officers violated department policy. The officers involved were placed on four days of administrative leave, in keeping with department practice. GCI to take over Alaska fiber provider Quintillion in $310M deal
