A large, several block area of downtown Dothan has been blocked off as Dothan police work to secure the scene.
DOTHAN , Ala. - Dothan police shot a man Sunday after authorities said he fired at officers following a standoff at a downtown home, police said. The shooting happened about three hours after an officer encountered a man with a gun near the intersection of South St. Andrews Street and Lafayette Street . The officer had been sent there after a 911 caller reported concerns that the man was armed.
Lt. Scott Owens said the man fired at the officer, who returned fire. Owens said the man then ran into a nearby home which began a standoff during which Special Response Team officers responded. A multi-block of downtown Dothan was blocked off. Police did not immediately identify the suspect. However, neighbors said he is Antonio King. While News4 could not independently confirm the information, public records show that a 45-year-old man named Antonio Christopher King resides at the home where the incident occurred.
Court records reveal a judge in 2020 sentenced King to 4 years in a state work release program after King’s guilty plea to possessing synthetic marijuana. Records show he told authorities about six months ago he moved to the Lafayette Street address. Hostage negotiators attempted to coax the man out. Preliminary reports indicate that when he eventually emerged, he shot at officers who returned the gunfire, authorities said. The State Bureau of Investigation, as a matter of policy, will investigate the shooting and present their findings to Houston County District Attorney Russ Goodman, who will decide whether to present the case to a grand jury.
