After receiving payments from industry, surgeons began expressing more positive attitudes towards robotic technology
Your physician assures you that you should have robotic surgery . Less pain, less blood loss, and faster recovery. The decision seems like a no-brainer. But is your surgeon enthusiastic about the robot for the wrong reasons?does not involve a robot autonomously performing procedures.
Instead, surgeons using robots still perform the procedures but, rather than move the instruments – the blades and cauterizing tools – by themselves, they operate controls that indirectly move the instruments, or they send commands to a computer to perform the maneuvers.. Its benefits are often small and only manifest for surgeons with extensive training and experience using the machinery. So what explains your physician’s enthusiasm? It could be that she received lots of training and has seen improved patient outcomes with the technology. It could be that she bought the equipment and has to pay off its high purchase price. But according to a new study, there’s a third possibility: your physician has received generous money from one of the companies that manufacture the robots. Consciously or unconsciously, that money could be influencing her recommendation.analyzed posts on X, from physicians commenting on robotic surgery. It evaluated the “polarity” of those comments: a score of -1 if the doctor slammed robots, 0 if neutral, and +1 if gushing with enthusiasm. The positivity of physicians’ comments rises significantly among those receiving the most generous industry payments. That’s not because companies are simply sending money to enthusiastic physicians. Instead, physicians’ comments become more positive after they receive the money. Here is a picture of that finding. Pay particular attention, on the right, to doctors receiving the top 25% of payments. They shift from expressing neutral attitudes towards robots to significantly more positive ones:Physicians cannot expect to remain objective about healthcare technologies and products if they accept money from the companies making those products. It is best for them to shun such payments. Patients deserve unbiased advice from the people caring for their medical problems.
