A weekend shooting at a downtown gas station has prompted city commissioners to call for community-wide action against gun violence.

DOTHAN , Ala. - A weekend shooting at a downtown gas station has prompted city commissioners to call for community-wide action against gun violence. District 2 Commissioner Phillipe Kirksey voiced a call to action after the shooting, which he said adds to a growing list of shooting incidents the city has had over the past few weeks.

Kirksey, who has a background in law enforcement, said the issue extends beyond police responsibility.

“I think a family issue, a church issue. We need everybody involved to help curb this violence because I think it’s just ridiculous. It’s definitely preventable,” Kirksey said.

“If you have a business that seems to be a catalyst or a hub where these violent incidents continue to occur, you really need to put parameters in place to keep your patrons in the regular community safe. And if you can’t do so, then we really need to take a look at your businesses being operational in this city because we can’t have this continued violence.

” Mayor Mark Saliba and Commissioner David Crutchfield echoed Kirksey’s sentiments, saying Dothan deserves better. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
