The Democratic primary competition was one of the most competitive races Illinois has seen in quite some time. That may be because this congressional seat is open for the first time in 26 years, and there were 15 Democratic candidates on the ballot hoping to replace Schakowsky. Biss is also a former Illinois state senator and is endorsed by Schakowsky. ABC7 was at his election night headquarters Tuesday. Among the other candidates, who raised quite a bit of money, enough to buy television ads, was former journalist Kat Abughazaleh. Others expected to do well on Tuesday were current Illinois state Sen. Laura Fine and gun control advocate Phil Andrew.
