PETRONAS continues to pioneer innovative solutions to drive lower emissions, with technology playing a crucial role in its journey toward sustainability. PETRONAS is contributing to regional CCS development through large-scale carbon capture and storage efforts.

Driven by a passion for progress, PETRONAS is leading Asia’s energy transition, innovating, collaborating and investing in a sustainable future for all. As a progressive energy and solutions partner, the company is committed to enriching lives for a sustainable future. Never before have energy companies faced such tough challenges: from rising consumption due to the growing population, to the urgent call for climate action, and disruptive forces brought on by digital innovation and AI. For Malaysia’s PETRONAS, this is not just a time of transition, but also an opportunity to lead. With more than five decades of experience and operations in over 100 countries, the energy company is drawing on its experience to offer innovative solutions with minimal impact on the environment. “Energy security and climate actions are not competing priorities but complementary agendas,” said Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of PETRONAS, at the recentFor a national oil company, achieving net zero by 2050 is no easy task. It needs to rethink the entire business to reduce its carbon footprint: from how energy is produced, to how it is delivered and consumed, while benefiting communities along the way. PETRONAS’ transition strategy is driven by a three-pronged approach: lowering emissions from its oil and gas operations, expanding into renewables and low-carbon alternatives, and supporting these shifts with digitalization, carbon management technologies and targeted measures to curb emissions. Work is already underway in curbing methane emissions while carbon capture and storage projects are moving ahead. To offer cleaner energy solutions, PETRONAS is diversifying its energy mix by investing in emerging sectors such as hydrogen, solar and sustainable biofuels. It means building on its capabilities and experience to progress renewable growth, expanding LNG infrastructure to enable hydrogen transport and deepening partnerships built over decades to deliver integrated energy solutions.Delivering cleaner energy solutions is another major focus for PETRONAS. In 2022, the company established its clean energy arm, Gentari, offering solutions through three growth engines: renewable energy, hydrogen and green mobility. Gentari’s venture into renewable energy includes investments in solar, wind and battery energy storage projects, to serve both Commercial and Industrial and utility-scale customers, particularly in Malaysia, India, Australia and Taiwan. At the same time, it is collaborating with companies across Asia and Europe, to advance hydrogen production and adoption especially in hard-to-abate sectors. In its green mobility business, Gentari is expanding its network of charging stations for electric vehicles, both in Malaysia and abroad, including India and Thailand. Gentari continues to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and strategic partners across industries and geographies to drive wider adoption of cleaner energy solutions, accelerating the transition to a low-carbon future. Gentari partnered with UltraTech Cement to develop a 7.5-megawatt hybrid Round-the-Clock renewable energy facility in Gujarat, India, integrating solar, wind and battery energy storage systems to provide continuous clean energy.Technology plays an important role in PETRONAS’ journey toward sustainability. The company continues to lead with innovations such as floating liquefied natural gas facilities. Its PFLNG SATU and PFLNG DUA platforms enable gas processing directly at sea, eliminating the need for extensive lands and pipelines and offering a more flexible and sustainable approach to LNG production. PETRONAS is the first energy company in the world to own and operate two FLNG facilities, with a third shore-based floating LNG facility underway. Beyond LNG, PETRONAS is ramping up its focus on low-carbon energy, including hydrogen and biofuels. These efforts are aligned with its broader goal to diversify revenue streams while helping industries transition to cleaner energy. PETRONAS’ evolution into an energy superstore is evident in its ability to deliver a full spectrum of progressive energy solutions, from LNG and renewables to future fuels like hydrogen and specialty chemicals—all underpinned by decades of operational excellence.Recognizing that the energy transition can only be achieved with collective action, PETRONAS is investing in regional and global collaborations. Its leadership in the ASEAN Power Grid, through the MY Energy Consortium with Tenaga Nasional Berhad, is one example. In May 2025, the consortium signed a deal to explore renewable electricity exports from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore, marking a step forward in cross-border clean energy trading. Globally, PETRONAS is forging partnerships with key players such as Japan’s JERA—one of the world’s largest LNG buyers—to pursue a balanced approach to energy security and decarbonization. Discussions with other Japanese companies such as ENEOS XPlora, Mitsubishi, JAPEX and more aim to explore the CCS value chain. For PETRONAS, providing world-class educational and training services ensures a more sustainable pipeline of highly knowledgeable and skilled talent that supports the organization’s growth, as well as Malaysia’s energy industry. This is done through various educational institutions such as Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS, Akademi Laut Malaysia and PETRONAS Leadership Centre. But it doesn’t stop there. PETRONAS is also taking steps to ensure the upskilling is inclusive and community driven. From social impact initiatives to collaborative upskilling programs with local educational institutes, the company is working to reduce disruption while unlocking long-term social and economic opportunities. Every step the company takes is guided by its purpose: to be a progressive energy and solutions partner enriching lives for a sustainable future. “As this region’s energy demand is set to nearly double by 2050, we will need no less than the entire energy ecosystem to come together with synchronized and aligned efforts for a just and equitable transition, where no community is left behind,” Taufik said.Charging Ahead With Energy Asia Today, PETRONAS’ influence spans beyond the energy sector—into chemicals, agriculture, digital infrastructure, and motorsports. Its growing presence in venture capital and adjacent industries reflects a wider belief that innovation will be the key to building a sustainable future. Through strategic investments and platforms such as Energy Asia, PETRONAS is shaping the narrative on energy security, equity, and climate action, proving that national oil companies can evolve into agile, forward-thinking partners in the global energy transition. Energy Asia, initiated by PETRONAS in 2023, has evolved from a conference into a thought-leadership and business advocacy forum, with the aim of accelerating Asia’s role in the global energy transition by focusing on solutions tailored to the needs of developing and emerging economies. The second edition in 2025, which concluded in June, welcomed more than 14,000 visitors, including 180 speakers and 4,000 conference attendees from 60 countries. During the event, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced PETRONAS’ plans to develop three CCS facilities in the country’s offshore waters, working with 10 international partners from Japan and South Korea, as well as global energy firms such as TotalEnergies and Shell. Through Energy Asia, PETRONAS is not only fostering solidarity and commitment to climate action but also helping define Asia’s role in the global transition agenda. The company’s initiatives highlight how national oil companies can be catalysts when they combine scale, strategy and a will to adapt to a changing landscape.
