Local organizations in Mobile, Alabama, are providing portable hot showers and pet boarding to help homeless individuals access warming shelters during an extreme cold warning. This initiative aims to address hygiene and pet care barriers that often prevent people from seeking shelter.
) - Two local organizations are removing barriers that keep homeless people from using warming shelters during an extreme cold warning covering South Alabama. Oak Park Church and Theodore Church of God are offering portable hot showers, while the City of Mobile Animal Services is boarding pets so owners can access warming shelters without leaving their animals behind.
Warming shelters rarely offer showers, creating a hygiene barrier for people seeking shelter from the cold. “Just give them an opportunity for them to feel clean and feel normal. Any time you deal with unhoused folks they feel shameful, they feel alone, but we’re just here to make them feel loved and let them know Jesus loves them and we’re here for them,” said Shane Jones, executive pastor at Oak Park Church. Jones expected around 75 people to use the showers Monday. The showers are available from noon to 3 p.m. at Theodore Church of God until the extreme cold warning ends. The church also offers showers every Friday year-round.The City of Mobile Animal Services is using its “Traveling Adoption Trailer” to house pets during the extreme cold, allowing owners to go to warming shelters without leaving their animals behind. “It’s a big deal because that’s one of the barriers that prevent people from getting shelter. A lot of people don’t want to leave their animals. A lot of those individuals that typically would not go into the shelter they now have that barrier removed,” said Kendall Young, homeless outreach coordinator for the City of Mobile. The city’s homeless outreach team worked with Animal Services to offer the service. The trailer holds 22 animals and sits at Theodore Church of God while the extreme cold warning lasts. As of Monday, five pets were staying there. Both services will continue through the end of this week.
