My Secret Life as a Sex Tourist

A 32-year-old British man reveals his hidden life as a sex tourist, detailing his motivations, experiences, and the network of men who share his practice. He discusses the appeal of paid-for sex abroad, the financial cost, and the moral considerations involved.

As the skies transitioned from grey in the UK to the promise of sunshine, I found myself on a plane contemplating the upcoming weeks in Thailand .

My appearance – clean-shaven, dressed in smart travel clothes, and engrossed in a Dan Brown novel – might have suggested a business trip. However, this journey was far from professional. It wasn’t the allure of beaches, sunshine, or inexpensive drinks that fueled my anticipation, but rather the readily available prospect of casual sexual encounters, accessible simply by opening my wallet. I am a 32-year-old single professional working in the property sector, residing in a modern city-centre apartment.

My life includes five-a-side football, evenings spent with friends, and occasional visits to my parents. On the surface, a perfectly ordinary existence. Yet, concealed beneath this normalcy lies a secret: I am a sex tourist. Several times a year, I shed my everyday persona to indulge in a practice considered taboo – travelling abroad for sexual encounters with sex workers.

Over the past three years, I’ve spent nearly £15,000 on this pursuit, covering travel, accommodation, and the services themselves, funded by my savings and credit cards. Contrary to the stereotype of sex tourists as lonely, older men, my experience suggests that individuals in their 20s and 30s are more likely to engage in this behaviour, a claim supported by statistics indicating that up to two-thirds of those who pay for sex do so while travelling abroad.

I’ve discovered a network of British men like myself, connected through WhatsApp groups, online forums, and social media, where we exchange advice and recommendations regarding destinations and experiences. My upbringing was relatively conventional. I grew up as the middle child in a happy, stable family, with parents who are still together and two sisters. I am now an uncle to three children.

My teenage years were challenging due to bullying related to my weight, which affected my self-confidence, but I always felt loved and supported at home. I’ve had a few short-term relationships since losing my virginity at 20, but I’m naturally shy and haven’t had much success in forming lasting connections. While I enjoyed the sexual experiences I did have, I lacked confidence and skill. I often envied friends who seemed effortlessly successful in attracting partners.

However, I never actively sought to pay for sex until a stag weekend in Amsterdam in 2022. After a period of lockdowns and prolonged solitude, I found myself in Amsterdam’s Red Light District with friends. Initially hesitant, I eventually succumbed to peer pressure and joined a group visiting a brothel. The experience was a revelation.

The woman made me feel comfortable, and the encounter was more adventurous than anything I’d experienced before. I enjoyed the feeling of liberation and the straightforwardness of the transaction. The next morning, my friends dismissed it as a one-time event, but I was captivated. I couldn’t shake the memory of the satisfying experience, which had cost only around £100.

While acknowledging the moral ambiguity, I rationalized my actions by believing I hadn’t caused any harm. Upon returning home, I began researching destinations offering similar experiences, surprised by the abundance of online resources and social media groups dedicated to sex tourism. I specifically avoided seeking such services within the UK, fearing the potential damage to my reputation and preferring the escapism of a foreign location. The taboo nature of the activity added to its appeal.

In early 2023, during a break before starting a new job, I travelled to Pattaya, Thailand, a popular destination for men seeking this type of experience
