The shot clock is coming to high school basketball in Alabama.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association announced Wednesday that a 35-second shot clock will be implemented in both boys and girls basketball beginning this fall in the 26′-27′ season after it passed through the AHSAA ’s Central Board of Control .

“This is something we have been studying a good while, and our basketball coaches’ leadership has been at the forefront of this decision,” said AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon. “We think this is the right time. We felt it needed to be added at the beginning of a classification period and not in the middle.” In addition to the shot clock implementation, the AHSAA also says the board voted to extend the mercy rule used in the post-season to include the state finals. The mercy rule establishes a running clock when a team takes a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter. The AHSAA also announced the unanimous election of Kim Kiel as the president of the AHSAA Wednesday, becoming the first female president in the AHSAA’s 105-year history. Kiel, the district 5 representative who is a 2026 AHSAA HOF inductee, has served the CBOC as its current vice president and has spent her entire career in education with Pelham City Schools as a teacher, coach, athletic director, principal, and now assistant superintendent. She also served as the interim president of the CBOC for a meeting earlier this year. Officials say Brian Jett, superintendent of Fort Payne City Schools and district 8 representative, was elected unanimously as the COBC vice president. The new officers will officially begin their one-year tenures during the July COBC meeting, scheduled for July 29. Students will be marked on Dragonfly rosters using an asterisk highlighted color or other means as designated by the AHSAA or DragonFly. This marking will be visible to member schools and/or the public along with the athlete’s name, jersey number, position, height, and weightRecommends a formal policy requiring the AHSAA Executive Staff and/or Central Board of Control to provide a clear, written breakdown of voting results for all legislative matters presented to the membership or Legislative Council.
