Alabama peanut farmers to vote on industry assessment referendum

The vote will take place on June 24 at several polling locations across the state.

Under Alabama law, the Alabama Peanut Producers Association conducts the referendum on behalf of peanut producers across the state to decide whether to continue the assessment of 12.5 cents per 100 pounds of peanuts marketed in Alabama.

“The drought has really decreased the amount of water that is available, that people have usually stored in ponds to help with irrigation. And there’s really just not any water on the subsurface, so that’s been difficult for the growers,” said Libbie Johnson, executive director of the Alabama Peanut Producers Association.

“It’s super important that we continue the research dollars because it’s the research that makes the farmers more productive and makes it more efficient. Just because you can produce more peanuts is not always the best if you don’t know the least expensive way to do it. I think our research from Auburn really helps get farmers a competitive edge,” Johnson said. The vote will take place on June 24 at several polling locations across the state.

In the Wiregrass area, those locations include the ALFA offices in Geneva, Headland, Enterprise and Ozark, as well as the APPA headquarters in Dothan on Reeves Street.
