CLEVELAND, Ohio - A young woman is recovering after a crash on Cleveland’s west side that killed one man and injured multiple others.happened last week at Lorain Avenue and West 150th Street.
Five people were taken to the hospital. James Cook, 54, did not survive.
“First and foremost, we want her safe and alive and we are blessed for that,” said Randi Richardson, Toombs’ sister. Toombs’ mother, Divina Hendrickson, said the family left Tennessee immediately after getting the call. Toombs is recovering from multiple surgeries for a broken femur and injured pelvis. Her father, Randy Toombs, said she has not lost her spirit.
“All she said was ‘I guess I need to put some stuff back and rearrange’ and I’m like yeah maybe so,” Randy Toombs said. “She’s amazing she’s the best one of us. We do joke and say we’re all going to be Payton when we grow up,” Richardson said. Toombs was weeks from graduation and recently got engaged.
The family had a wedding shower at her oldest sister’s house last weekend. While Toombs will still earn her degree from the University of Tennessee this year, walking across the stage likely will not happen. Her family said they do not know how long she will be in the hospital or when she will be able to return home to Tennessee.
“We’re planning on hanging out here for as long as we need to hang out here. It’s not easy, but it’s going to be done,” Randy Toombs said.
