Workers at Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital protested outside the facility, saying short staffing puts both caregivers and patients in danger.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Workers at Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital protested outside the facility, saying short staffing puts both caregivers and patients in danger.
“We deserve the staffing that we need. We don’t deserve skeleton crews,” one employee said. Artheta Peters, who represents the workers through the SEIU Local 1199, the local union, said current staffing levels leave certified nursing assistants vulnerable to patient violence.
“We have had nurses hurt on the floor, punched, off of work due to injury. We feel like if there would have been two or more staff available at that time, that could have been avoided,” Peters said. Peters said nurses often care for as many as 26 patients at a time. Nurses want a fraction of that.
She said the current staffing forces nurses to provide minimal care.
“Basically you’re just meeting a basic need, filling water and running out the room to the next patient,” Peters said. The union is currently in negotiations with Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital. Workers said bargaining sessions have stalled, and the union has filed more than a dozen claims with the National Labor Relations Board alleging bad faith bargaining.
In a statement, Cleveland Clinic said it is negotiating in good faith and hopes to reach a deal with workers as it has before. We continue to negotiate in good faith with the bargaining unit representatives at Lutheran Hospital. Our goal is to achieve a mutually agreeable contract renewal as we have in years past. Cleveland Clinic appreciates the loyalty and care provided by every one of its caregivers at Lutheran Hospital.
“So, $12 and $13 don’t cut it right? ” Peters said.
“They’re only countering right now with a 1.5% increase, that’s pennies. ”More traffic alerts for downtown Cleveland due to filming High school basketball coach accused of sex crimes with student after leading team to state championshipWoman recovering after deadly Cleveland crash, family by her side - clipped version
