Local groups and organizations are working to keep people safe from the cold all winter long as Northeast Ohio experiences one of its coldest winters on record.

LAKE COUNTY , Ohio - Local groups and organizations are working to keep people safe from the cold all winter long as Northeast Ohio experiences one of its coldest winters on record. Lake County has called a Code Blue alert, providing those in need with a warm place to stay, food, and a place to sleep for the night during subzero temperatures that can be dangerous and deadly.

LakeTran is part of a county partnership that picks up people in need of rides in downtown Painesville at one of several churches, the library, or the mission, and when a Code Blue is called. Then they drop them off at the United Way of Lake County offices in Mentor where an overnight shelter is set up. One woman with her belongings in a suitcase and backpack was willing to talk to us, but asked not to be identified said, “It’s a wonderful, great thing. I mean it’s a very big blessing.”The partnership is vital to the community’s health and safety during subzero temperatures. “There have been people who have literally not gotten out of the cold and frozen to death,” said the Painesville woman in need of shelter. A man named Ethan was also catching a ride to the shelter, telling 19 News he lost his home, dog, and everything he owned in a house fire.“I’m thankful. I love the fact that they have the shelter, and I love Pastor Brian and his wife,” he said. “They’ve given us lots of help and hope. So at least somewhere to stay warm.”Brian Forney, the lead pastor at the Painesville Church of the Nazarene, oversees the volunteers at the shelter along with his wife. The couple has volunteered their services to the county for the last eight or nine years, and Pastor Forney admits that this year the shelters have been needed the most. “We’ve been open, I believe this is the 15th or 16th night in the last three weeks,” Pastor Forney said. The United Way offices recently became the new shelter site because the need was so great. Along with Sub-Zero Mission, 211, and the United Way, organizers refuse to let anyone stay out in the cold.“We call a code when the air temperature is single digits, and if the wind chill falls below zero or if there’s a winter storm warning. Those scenarios have all happened in the last three weeks,” according to Forney.“It’s deadly when it gets this cold out, and we want to care for people and make sure they’re okay. That they have a safe, warm place,” Pastor Forney said.
