A rally outside the U.S. Capitol saw voting rights advocates and members of Congress opposing the SAVE America Act, a Republican-backed proposal that aims to change federal election procedures. The debate intensified as Republicans, citing election integrity, pushed for greater federal oversight in election administration, while Democrats argued the changes are designed to suppress votes.

Members of congress join leading voting rights advocates and impacted voters from across the country to rally against the SAVE America Act. With midterm elections ahead, President Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are pushing a slate of election changes that have sparked sharp partisan debate, even as polling shows broad support for some of the proposals. The hearing also became a forum for broader Republican efforts to expand federal influence over election administration nationwide.{ } Republicans this week heard testimony from two secretaries of state — Kansas Republican Scott Schwab and Minnesota Democrat Steve Simon — focused on maintaining accurate voter rolls. “Election integrity is not a complicated issue. Only eligible voters should be casting ballots in our elections. One illegal vote is too many. Congress can strengthen standards for federal elections, and it's time that we act,” Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis., said during his opening remarks of the House Administration Committee hearing. The hearing also became a forum for broader Republican efforts to expand federal influence over election administration nationwide. Republicans have pushed the SAVE America Act, a voting bill that would change multiple election procedures and has drawn vocal opposition from Democrats. “The people lying about the security of our elections want to take your power away by discouraging you from voting at all. They’re desperate to make voters distrust Democracy because they’re afraid of losing power,” said Rep. Joe Morelle, D-N.Y.found overwhelming support for removing non-citizens from voter rolls. The poll also found majority support for a SAVE America Act provision requiring states to share voter data with the Department of Homeland Security. But support varied by party: more than 60% of Democrats opposed the data-sharing requirement, while Republicans and independents backed it.“I have made it a priority to pursue every legal tool to identify voters whose registration should be updated. In Kansas, 105 election officials conducted voter roll maintenance daily,” Schwab said. Another provision of the SAVE America Act would require proof of ID when voters use a mail-in ballot, a change critics argue could slow mail processing. Simon warned the requirement would shift a major burden onto the U.S. Postal Service and make voting by mail harder. “It’s putting the postal service in a position I don’t think it’s ever been in, which is being the eligibility cops when it comes to elections, and the SAVE Act, likewise, would make voting by mail very difficult,” Simon said.Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has requested unredacted voter data from multiple states, prompting challenges from several Democratic-led states. Four judges have sided with four different states, dismissing the federal demands for the data.SAN ANTONIO -Crews are responding to a rescue situation along the San Antonio River.Rescue crews were called out just after 8 a.m. Friday to an area of the river near East Mitchell Street and Oakcrest Avenue.Check backPerson hit and killed on North Side highway SAN ANTONIO - A person is dead after being hit by a vehicle early Friday morning along a North Side highway, according to police. The deadly accident happened around 4 a.m. along U.S. Highway 281 and Josephine Street.ChTexas Department of Public Safety officials say migrant encounters at the southern border remain significantly lower than in recent years.
