Zoe Coutts, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for allowing her boyfriend, Scott O'Connor, to beat her two-year-old son, Kol Page, to death. The toddler suffered catastrophic injuries, including brain damage, after a violent attack in April 2022. Despite clear signs of abuse, Coutts failed to protect Kol or seek medical help, even attending a football match with O'Connor instead. Kol died two years later, and O'Connor was sentenced to 18 years for manslaughter. The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of child abuse and the failures of those meant to protect the most vulnerable.
A 35-year-old mother from Kent has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for failing to protect her two-year-old son, Kol Page, from fatal abuse by her boyfriend.
Zoe Coutts met Scott O'Connor, 36, on the dating app Bumble in autumn 2021, and the couple subjected the toddler to escalating violence. Kol suffered catastrophic injuries, including severe bruising, internal bleeding, and brain damage, after being violently attacked by O'Connor in April 2022. Despite the obvious signs of abuse, Coutts failed to intervene or seek medical help, even going to a football match with O'Connor instead of taking Kol to the hospital.
The toddler survived for two more years but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on June 29, 2024, at the age of four. During the trial at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutors revealed that Kol's injuries were so severe they resembled those from a high-impact car crash or a fall from a great height. Text messages between Coutts and O'Connor showed a disturbing disregard for the child's welfare, with O'Connor once suggesting they 'slap him back to sleep' when Kol was crying.
The court heard that Coutts and O'Connor fabricated stories to avoid responsibility, even blaming Kol's injuries on his own clumsiness. O'Connor was sentenced to 18 years in prison for manslaughter, with an additional five-year extended license period. The judge condemned both defendants for their lack of remorse and failure to protect Kol. Kol's foster parents, who cared for him after the attack, described the heartbreaking extent of his suffering in a victim impact statement.
They recounted how Kol was in constant pain, crying out so loudly that he could be heard from the hospital lifts. Despite their efforts to comfort him, any physical contact caused him unbearable agony. The foster mother expressed her love for Kol and the deep emotional toll of witnessing his decline. The case has sparked outrage over the systemic failures that allowed such abuse to continue unchecked, with calls for stricter protections for vulnerable children in similar situations
