WASILLA, Alaska - A Palmer man is facing felony charges after allegedly driving a vehicle into the Wasilla Police Department on Wednesday. According to charging documents, 41-year-old Palmer resident Thomas DeSalvo II drove into the building on Wednesday and then deployed bear spray .

Oborn told Alaska’s News Source that he was inside the room when the vehicle drove into the building. Following the crash, Oborn said, he went up to the vehicle to make sure the driver was okay.

“I get up, walk over, I’m looking at the door, and at this guy in this car, he’s got a red bandana on, and that’s when I realized — he’s not drunk. He didn’t just accidentally do this. This is on purpose," Oborn said.

“Never seen anything like it. And I’ve never seen the cops acting like they were frightened like that,” Oborn said. After the crash, according to charging documents, DeSalvo was detained. The documents go on to note that when DeSalvo was placed into an ambulance for medical evaluation, he became combative and began kicking an officer who was in the ambulance with him.

DeSalvo later made a statement that he should have run over officers that day, according to the complaint.

“Yeah, well, it’s definitely not something that has happened that I know of in the state of Alaska as far as a deliberate situation of somebody driving into a police department on purpose,” said Amanda Graham, Wasilla Police Department spokesperson. “I think everybody’s first reaction was shock and then immediate into action to deal with the situation. ” The Wasilla Police Department told Alaska’s News Source that the crash caused damage to the door frame and structure of the building.

The Wasilla Police Department said it is still open and functional as officials wait for an estimate on repair costs. DeSalvo was issued a $500,000 appearance bond and a $500,000 performance bond, according to the Palmer courthouse. Alaska’s News Source reached out to DeSalvo’s public defender but had not heard back by publication time.
