Utah Senate President Stuart Adams defended donations to his political action committee, Adams Leadership PAC, as the progressive group Better Utah called for an ethics investigation into contributions from firms it thinks may have business with the state. The donations were reported a week after Adams and other members of the Military Installation Development Authority board voted to approve the controversial proposed data center in Box Elder County.
Utah Senate President Stuart Adams defended donations to his political action committee, Adams Leadership PAC, as the progressive group Better Utah called for an ethics investigation into contributions from firms it thinks may have business with the state.
Tens of thousands of dollars in PAC donations were reported a week after Adams and other members of the Military Installation Development Authority board voted to approve the controversial proposed data center in Box Elder County. Campaign and PAC contributions are disclosed and are entirely separate from any policy decisions, said Adams, in a statement late Wednesday afternoon. Elizabeth Hutchings, spokeswoman for Better Utah, said PAC donations feel 'a little icky,' and deserve legislative attention.
There's no evidence of that, Hutchings replied. I think it would take a full investigation. Better Utah started an online petition drive, but it has not filed a formal ethics complaint against Adams.
Meanwhile, a water rights change application for the data center, filed with the state, was withdrawn on Thursday. Joel Ferry, director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, expects it will be resubmitted. The project still requires approved permits from the state for water and air quality.
For skeptics who might say there's no way the state is going to stand in the way at this point, that maybe these permit applications will be altered, but they're not going to be denied, you say what? Well, this is a process, Ferry replied, and whether or not they're approved or denied depends on the merits of the application.
