UK’s robotic ‘Golf Bag’ fleet to take a swing at dangerous work, keeping humans safe

UK scientists and industry pioneers are developing robot fleet- including autonomous robots, drones, and AI to handle hazardous CBRN tasks.

In the United Kingdom , robotic systems could soon replace humans in hazardous environments involving chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear threats.A collaboration involving Oxford Dynamics , Createc , Autonomous Devices, and the University of Bristol has secured over $2.

5 million in funding from two government departments to develop autonomous solutions for high-risk situations. The advanced suite of technologies, including a robot fleet, aims to remove humans from hazardous tasks while processing complex data in real time. The UK Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs plans to use these tools for environmental remediation and recovery efforts. Beyond this, the innovations could address challenges in UK defense and other sectors while supporting over 100 specialist jobs.“It is an example of how the work of Defense, Science and Technology Laboratory is delivering science and technology advantage across Government and ensuring that defense and security are prepared for the future,” said a statement from the UK government.Robot fleet and other developments for hazardous tasksStrider, a prototype robot developed by Oxford Dynamics, is designed to handle hazardous materials and perform semi-autonomous tasks in challenging environments. The company developed Strider with support from a $1.2 million contract with the UK Ministry of Defense .Built for Defra, it can retrieve contaminated objects, seal them in containers, and operate beyond the operator’s direct line of sight. Using infrared, radar, and lidar, Strider navigates dangerous terrain, making it ideal for environments where personal protective equipment limits human mobility.Strider is anticipated to be used in situations such as the Salisbury Novichok assault in 2018, supporting environmental cleanup and recovery after CBRN accidents.Strider robot from Oxford Dynamics perorming a task.Inspired by JARVIS from Iron Man, Oxford Dynamics intends to improve Strider with its AVIS AI software—A Very Intelligent System. Without the need for specific AI knowledge, AVIS transforms visual inspection by boosting productivity, decreasing errors, and cutting expenses. To preserve the intricacy of visual information while lowering cognitive strain, the company is also developing AI technologies that interpret data more like people. These developments have the potential to revolutionize data analysis in a number of industries, enhancing Strider’s contribution to public safety and defense in the UK.Autonomous cleanup techIn addition to the Strider, Autonomous Devices has developed a multi-directional drone equipped with a swabbing system to detect contamination in hard-to-reach areas, such as through upstairs windows. The drone also has the capability to apply decontamination spray, enhancing its effectiveness in hazardous environments.Next is an advanced robot control software that has been developed by Createc to manage a self-governing robot fleet, such as four-wheeled vehicles, drones, and a robot dog. When necessary, these robots can be controlled remotely, but they can also gather samples and evaluate occurrences independently. Their ability to use tools, climb stairs, and unlock car doors makes them extremely versatile for intricate tasks. The University of Bristol device undergoing tests.Furthermore, an uncrewed ground vehicle with a robotic arm that can operate in tandem with a tethered drone is being developed at the University of Bristol. This device uses a unique spray mechanism to permit decontamination at different heights.According to the departments, by combining ground and aerial robotics, the technology enhances the efficiency of remediation efforts in hazardous environments, supporting safer and more effective operations.“Science and technology are vital in preparing for the future and whatever challenges and opportunities that brings. These innovative solutions could help remove people from hazardous situations and ultimately save lives,” said Professor Gideon Henderson, chief scientific advisor at Defra, in a statement.
