They said school leaders put student safety first. Aja Steck, a parent at Alta High School, said her family first received an email around 9 p.m. Wednesday notifying them about a threat involving the school. At first, Steck said her family treated the situation like other school safety alerts they had seen before. But early Thursday morning, another message arrived announcing classes had been canceled.
“This is obviously a big deal because they’re not going to just close the school because of a hoax,” Steck said. Investigators with the Sandy City Police Department said the tip came in through the SafeUT app, and officers immediately began working with school administrators. According to a message sent to parents, the tip suggested students may have been planning to bring weapons to the school.
“We are investigating the tip, we are working the tip and all of the leads that we can,” said Sgt. Michael Olsen with Sandy Police.
“They were on top of it and I commend them for that,” Steck said. Olsen said Sandy Police works “extremely closely” with school administrators during incidents like this, including through school resource officers assigned throughout the district. Steck said conversations about school safety have become part of everyday life for many families. She also said online reporting systems and social media can help students alert adults when something appears concerning.
“I applaud the kid or the kids or whoever made the Utah Safe app aware of it because it’s got to be scary,” Steck said.
