The sheriff said both sexual trafficking and labor trafficking exist in the area.
NEW BROCKTON, Ala. - Coffee County Sheriff Scott Byrd is warning parents about predators who use the internet to harm children through human trafficking .The sheriff said both sexual trafficking and labor trafficking exist in the area.
“There’s the sexual trafficking and the labor trafficking. We do have both in the area. We are fortunate that it is not as terrible as it is in the border states and the bigger cities, but it does exist in our local environments,” Byrd said.He advised parents to pay attention if their children don’t ask questions about who they’re talking to or dating through online games. According to Byrd, 95 percent of people who are being trafficked do not know they’re being victimized until it’s too late. The sheriff, who is a father, said his law enforcement experience doesn’t guarantee his own children’s safety. He described feeling concerned when one of his daughters wanted to work as a nanny overseas because he couldn’t verify who was behind the screen. He advised parents to monitor their children’s online conversations because predators will always lie about their identities. “So, most of these predators will build some sort of relationship with these children and figure out what their weaknesses is,” Byrd said.Byrd urged people to report suspicious activities to their local police department.Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
