The State House is expected to be demolished as lawmakers prepare to move into a new State House that is under construction.
) - Alabama lawmakers ended the 2026 legislative session on the final day they will meet in the state’s existing State House, the building behind the Capitol that has hosted floor debates for roughly four decades.
The State House is expected to be demolished as lawmakers prepare to move into a new State House that is under construction.Republicans and Democrats alike said they are ready to leave the aging building. Some cited longstanding maintenance concerns.“The memories are that you can’t breathe and you’re all sick at the end of the year because the walls are full of mold, so I’m not going to be really sad it’s torn down. It’s needed to be for a while,” Collins said. Lawmakers have been asked to remove their belongings from the old State House by the end of July, though no demolition date has been announced publicly.Even as they look ahead to a new space, lawmakers said the current State House carries decades of history.“For me as a Black woman, I’m humbled today to be able to become an advocate and be able to walk the halls; halls that at one time I would not have ever been able to walk. To come into this space, I’m honored to be in this class; the final class at the State House,” Givan said. Others said they are drawing inspiration from longtime legislators as they prepare to begin the next chapter in the new building. Rep. Kenyatté Hassell, D-Montgomery, mentioned former Rep. John H. Hatcher, who served for decades in the Legislature. “He was one of the longest tenured representatives that we had in Montgomery, and for him to be here and transition into a new building, hopefully I can get 44 years in the new building,” Hassell said. The 2027 legislative session is expected to begin early next year in the new State House, which is currently under construction.Despite the changing setting, lawmakers said the focus of their work will remain the same. Rep. Adline Clarke, said her concern is representing constituents regardless of where lawmakers meet. “I’m more concerned about representing and helping to improve the quality of life for all Alabamians. Whether it’s in this old building or whether it’s in a new one,” Clark said.Pastor charged with manslaughter after man drowns in kiddie pool during baptism‘We’re losing our youth’: Clayton leader calls for action following deadly weekend Pike County crashInteractive Dashboard: Alabama’s 2026 legislative session
