A statewide coalition is working to educate residents on how dangerous it could be if property tax is eliminated on homes and businesses.

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A statewide coalition is working to educate residents on how dangerous it could be if property tax is eliminated on homes and businesses.

Ohioans to Protect Public Services has now united to explain what would happen with no revenue from property tax. “Our organization supports meaningful tax reform, but the total elimination of property taxes without a secured, guaranteed replacement creates a public safety crisis,” said Independence Police Chief Robert Butler, president of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police.

“These funds are the backbone of many local law enforcement agencies. Eliminating them without a transition plan leads to a predictable result: slower response times, fewer officers on patrol, and an erosion of the security every Ohioan relies on.”

According to Ohioans to Protect Public Services, property taxes make up nearly two-thirds of all local tax revenue and is the largest source of funding for public schools. The Committee to Abolish Ohio Property Taxes is the organization behind getting the constitutional amendment on the November ballot and volunteers are currently collecting signatures.
