Rainbow trout releases underway in Ohio ponds and lakes

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is releasing rainbow trout in ponds and lakes across Ohio.

OHIO - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is stocking rainbow trout in ponds and lakes across the state. ODNR said the releases began in March and will continue through May 2026, as long as locations are ice-free and accessible to anglers.

The first release was March 11 in southeast Ohio. The final release is scheduled for May 16 in Cuyahoga County that includes a special angler event. ODNR said the trout stockings are an opportunity for families to fish together and introduce young people to the outdoors.ODNR said about 80,000 rainbow trout are released statewide each spring. The fish are raised in hatcheries and measure 10 to 13 inches when stocked.
