The advisories cover the northern Wasatch Front — including Bountiful , Ogden, Brigham City and Logan — and the strongest winds are expected between Bountiful and Layton, where gusts could reach 65 mph.
Until 6 p.m. Thursday, east winds of 25-35 mph are expected, with gusts up to 55 mph. From 6 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday, east winds of 35-45 mph are in the forecast, with gusts up to 65 mph. Winds are expected to peak “toward midnight.” The weather service warns that “damaging winds” could blow down trees and power lines, possibly causing widespread power outages. And travel along Interstate 15 in northern Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties — as well as on U.S. 89 and the Legacy Parkway — could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles like semi trucks and campers. People in the affected areas are urged to tie down or move outdoor items indoors because the high winds could cause “trampolines, garbage cans, outdoor furniture and other items” to “become projectiles.” According to the National Weather Service, the low pressure system causing the high winds “will remain parked across the Great Basin” heading into the weekend, creating “unsettled conditions,” with afternoon showers and thunderstorms. There’s a 20% chance of rain in Salt Lake City on Friday afternoon. However, the upcoming weekend is “shaping up to be quite a nice one, despite the fact that an area of low pressure will sit overhead.” Temperatures, which have been below normal all week, wil rise to normal — even above normal. In Salt Lake City, the forecast high is 64 on Thursday, 68 on Friday; 72 on Saturday; 77 on Sunday; 79 on Monday; and 77 on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Normal highs for this time of year are 70-72.
