Authorities are investigating the deaths of several individuals while in custody in New York City, raising concerns about medical care and conditions within the city's detention facilities. Recent incidents include a woman suffering from withdrawal, a man with a medical episode, and another who died after receiving aid, highlighting potential issues with medical protocols and inmate health.
Sunday after repeatedly suffering withdrawal symptoms that sent her back-and-forth from the hospital, the NYPD and law enforcement sources said. Zamiqua Miller – who had three active arrest warrants – was arrested late Friday for alleged possession of heroin, crack cocaine and a crack pipe, according to police sources.
Between Saturday morning and evening, Miller was transported twice to local hospitals for withdrawal symptoms, and each time returned to Brooklyn Central Booking on Schermerhorn Street near Smith Street upon release, the sources said. Miller was awaiting arraignment early Sunday when she began suffering a medical episode, according to authorities and sources.
EMS responded to the scene, but Miller could not be saved – she was pronounced dead around 7:20 a.m., cops said.
