A Chicago firm will update a five-year-old study on the feasibility of establishing a convention center in Lake County, the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority board of directors decided Thursday.
The board selected Johnson Consulting , a real estate and hospitality consulting firm, to do the new study for $57,500. Sherri Ziller, the RDA’s president and CEO, said the updated study is to be presented to the Lake County Commissioners by the beginning of March 2024, and the commissioners will have until December that year to accept it or not. The previous study was conducted by in 2018 by Convention, Sports & Leisure International, which also submitted a proposal for the update.
The 2018 study envisioned a 145,000-square-foot convention center, and said it would need to be next to a hotel with at least 225 rooms. It said the convention center could add nearly $400 million into the local economy over the next 20 years. The 2018 study was commissioned after the Star Plaza Theatre and the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza in Merrillville, which had previously hosted large events, were demolished.
