An animal rights activist and former FBI most-wanted fugitive was apprehended in North Wales after spending 21 years evading justice for nail bomb attacks in California.
For more than two decades, Daniel Andreas San Diego existed as a ghost, evading the relentless pursuit of the Federal Bureau of Investigation while hiding in plain sight across various international borders.
The saga of one of America's most elusive fugitives finally reached a dramatic conclusion in November 2024, when law enforcement agencies tracked him down to a modest, secluded bungalow in the quiet hamlet of Maenan, located near Llanrwst in North Wales. San Diego, now 46 years old, had spent twenty-one years on the run, during which time he became a symbol of the FBI's struggle to capture domestic terrorists.
The modest three-bedroom residence, tucked away on a hillside, provided the perfect sanctuary for a man who had spent years mastering the art of invisibility. The roots of the international manhunt stretch back to the early 2000s in California. San Diego was accused by the United States government of orchestrating and planting three devastating nail bombs between 2003 and 2004. These attacks were specifically aimed at corporations with ties to animal testing, reflecting his extremist commitment to animal rights.
San Diego was linked to a radical group known as the Animal Liberation Brigade, which claimed responsibility for several bombings targeting businesses associated with Huntingdon Life Sciences, an animal-testing laboratory based in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. The first two bombings in August 2003 targeted the Chiron biotechnology corporation in Emeryville. Shortly after, in 2004, another explosive device, packed with nails to maximize shrapnel damage, was detonated at the Shaklee Corporation in Pleasanton.
While these attacks caused significant property damage and terror, fortunately, no one was injured in the blasts. Despite the lack of casualties, the FBI viewed San Diego as extremely dangerous, labeling him as the first domestic terror suspect to be placed on their most-wanted list. To evade capture, San Diego utilized his advanced technical skills as a computer specialist, a talent the FBI explicitly warned about during his time as a fugitive.
With a bounty of 250,000 dollars on his head, he navigated a series of undisclosed locations before settling in the United Kingdom. In the UK, he adopted the persona of Danny Webb, claiming to be an IT professional born in Ireland. To further deceive his neighbors and local community in North Wales, he maintained a low profile, blending into the rural landscape.
The property he purchased in 2023 was an isolated hillside home, accessible only via a narrow single-track lane and a steep dirt road. This strategic location offered him a clear vantage point of the Conwy Valley and the A470, the primary road leading into the hamlet, allowing him to monitor any approaching vehicles.
The previous owner of the home, Aled Evans, noted that the property was an ideal spot for anyone wanting to keep their head down, mentioning that San Diego had expressed a particular interest in the surrounding woodland for mountain biking. The end of San Diego's freedom came when the National Crime Agency and North Wales Police coordinated a precision operation to take him into custody near Conwy.
Throughout his years of evasion, San Diego had featured five times on the television program America's Most Wanted, with the FBI releasing updated computer-generated images to account for his aging process. It was also noted that the fugitive strictly followed a vegan diet, avoiding all animal products, a detail consistent with the ideologies that drove his criminal activities in California.
Following his arrest, he was transported to HMP Belmarsh in London, where he currently remains while the legal process for his extradition to the United States unfolds. Meanwhile, the secluded bungalow that served as his final hideout has been placed on the auction market with a guide price of 300,000 pounds.
