NORTH OLMSTED, Ohio - Great Northern Mall is a much different now than when it first opened its doors. Some storefronts are now closed, and the number of shoppers who used to come to shop and eat just aren’t there.
North Olmsted Mayor Nicole Dailey Jones said a new grocery store might go into one of the vacant properties. “We’re excited for new opportunities and development there. We’ve tried to lay the groundwork for quite a number of years now,” Daley Jones said.
As the future of malls continues to evolve, the city has changed zoning on the property to allow for not just retail but housing as well. “Great Northern Mall and the city of North Olmsted are intertwined. And so we want to see that area continue to succeed. And it’s such a great location,” Dailey Jones said.
She said the city really grew up around the mall, so they want to make it easy for new developers and businesses to open new opportunities. “So for both residents, people who work here, and just people driving by, I mean, it’s a great location. And we know that it will once again redevelop and continue to provide both shopping, commercial, and hopefully, eventually, maybe even some residential opportunities,” Dailey Jones said.
