The Family Sunshine Center emphasizes the importance of providing nonjudgmental support and believing survivors of sexual assault, highlighting the impact of a compassionate response and the availability of resources for help. The center stresses that sexual assault affects both men and women.

“I think it is very important, even outside of this month, just providing. Always being nonjudgmental because you never know who has experienced sexual assault ,” said Shemeka Brock, shelter services coordinator for theBrock said being informed can help people recognize signs and respond appropriately if someone confides in them.

“It could have happened in their childhood, it could have happened previously, or they could be in the middle of something that may be about to occur,” she said. “So you want to always just provide that nonjudgmental feedback, believe them, listen.”

Sexual assault does not only affect women. More than 1 in 6 men experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime, according to the CDC.“A lot of them don’t come forward because they believe that people won’t believe them,” she said. “People will joke about the situation or just being embarrassed about it. So men are sexually assaulted as well.”

The Family Sunshine Center said the best immediate response when someone says they have been sexually assaulted is to listen and take them seriously. “A lot of times, survivors are not knowing what they want to do, but that first impact that they have with you, whether you believe in them or provide a listening ear, could change their entire output,” Brock said.
