WICKSBURG, Ala. - In the midst of a struggling agricultural market, Bryan Carpenter’s faith sustains him and his farm. For generations, JBC Farms has raised the Carpenters into cultivators. The farm kept Bryan close with his father and brother as the three grew peanuts, cotton and corn, and nurtured cattle as a team until Bryan lost his father in 2017.
“It’s the same job, but everything changes. I still miss him,” Bryan said. “It was a privilege that God blessed us with, and I’m thankful that I had the time that I did have.” By 2023, Bryan was managing JBC Farms on his own, while his brother transitioned into the restaurant business. “I provide the feed to the chickens, and my brother feeds the chickens to us. So it’s a full circle of life, I guess you can say,” Bryan grinned. While his fields lay bare in the winter, Bryan sells last season’s extra corn, grain and other crops to be used for animal feed. Loading and delivering the extra goods to the nearest mills gives him time to brainstorm what to plant next season.“Nobody wants to work and not make money. And so you’re trying to play chess with it and make the best decision to make the best investment you can,” Bryan said. While economic struggles and uncertainties persist, Bryan’s faith reminds him that farming is not a job but a privilege. “It is a wonderful life. There’s a lot of spiritual food that you can take away from agriculture. It brings a reality to what the gospel really is about, how God can bring life from nothing. And I get to witness it,” Bryan said.“I pray, I plant and I pray. That’s my motto to live by. If I do my part and I’m faithful in my part, I believe God’s going to be faithful in his part.
