Zuma’s trial postponed as parties ‘completely in the dark’ on his medical condition
Proceedings of the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday, held via video conference, ended in the matter being postponed to September 9 and 10 by Judge Piet Koen.On July 6, the former president was admitted to hospital for medical observation. He had been taken to hospital from the Estcourt Correctional Centre, where he had been jailed last month for contempt of court by the Constitutional Court following his refusal to appear before the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture.
Advocate Dali Mpofu, who is part of Zuma’s legal team, said his team would be directed by a medical report in terms of how to proceed with the case. “There are three possible outcomes. The happiest outcome is if the medical report says [Zuma] is healthy and can attend the hearing, in which event we would have a hearing in court on the special plea. The other possibility is that the court says he is not fit to stand trial and the state accepts that opinion, in which event there would be a very brief further postponement on the day.
He explained that the medical report was important to the state so it could determine what should happen regarding the adjourned hearing, and for it to instruct and consult its own medical experts about how to respond to the report.
