A Seattle native and former U.S. Ski Team racer struggled with that well into her 20s. It's why she created a program called ZGiRLS to teach girls the skills they need to build confidence in themselves. Jilyne Jarvis grew up in Seattle, honing her craft on the slopes of Crystal Mountain. Dynamic and fast on the outside, she struggled on the inside."It's not something that's taught in school. It's not something you're just born knowing how to do," said Jarvis, ZGiRLS co-founder and executive director. "You're born confident and whole, but something happens in adolescence where it starts to chip away at your confidence and it starts to chip away your self-belief." This is one of the reasons she started ZGiRLS, a nonprofit that offers a confidence building program for girls ages 11 to 14. "Thirteen to 14, that is where that self-doubt really starts to take hold and the patterns of adolescence will traject into adulthood," Jarvis said. "We want to teach these skills before those patterns of self-doubt start to take hold, and so if you teach these skills in middle school, they'll learn and then they'll grasp them and they'll use them for the rest of their life.""Our curriculum was developed by a team of mental health professionals and Olympians and counselors, and a lot of thought went into designing this for the mind and the place that 11-to-14-year-old girls are in, so it's fun, it's interactive," Jarvis said. "It's also based in science to help girls really learn how to build confidence in themselves." What really sets this program apart is who is teaching the lessons. The lessons are taught by female Olympians and professional athletes who volunteer their time. "The reason is because athletes are at the top of their game. Everyone looks at them like, 'Oh, they're amazing, they have everything together,'" Jarvis said. "But they sit in front of these girls and say, 'I struggle with this, too.'" Many of the sports psychologists who helped developed the program are now in Paris supporting Olympians. "It's something we can do something about," Jarvis said. "It's absolutely a skill that you can learn." ZGiRLS has been around for 10 years and is now in 31 states. You don't have to be an athlete to participate. It costs $129, but 75% of participants are on a scholarship. Jarvis said no girl is turned away.
