A young driver has been accused of careless driving over a serious three-car crash on a notorious Queensland highway that led to the death of one person and injured three others. The 21-year-old man was driving a ute north along the Bruce Hwy when police allege he crossed onto the opposite side of the road and collided with a truck, before then hitting a Mazda driving behind the truck, in Bloomsbury, south of Proserpine, about 2.50pm on August 1.
’s analysis of AusRAP crash data in August showed the Bruce Hwy had an average fatal and serious injury crash rate three to five times higher than major national highways in New South Wales and Victoria. managing director and CEO David Carter said the statistics highlighted the urgent need for an upgrade. “The Bruce Hwy is the backbone of this state, it’s supposed to be a national highway but when you compare it to the Pacific or Hume, it’s substandard,” Carter said. “Those interstate highways have rightfully been upgraded to three, four and five stars out of five for infrastructure safety, yet around half of the Bruce is still a poor two-star rating.
