Emotions ran high in Rochester City Court Tuesday as Walter Balkum Jr. was arraigned for second-degree manslaughter in the beating death of Melikah Bruner.
49-year-old Walter Balkum Jr. was arraigned in Monroe County Court Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2024, on a manslaughter charge in the Aug. 27 death of Melikah Bruner at a home on Hazelwood Terrace in Rochester .
Balkum, 49, is accused of fatally beating his Bruner, his 43-year-old girlfriend, at a home on Hazelwood Terrace last Tuesday, Aug. 27.Balkum has an extensive criminal record and was arrested in June for allegedly assaulting Bruner. Police said Balkum has four prior felony convictions and seven prior misdemeanor convictions.A woman in the courtroom yelled out, "You're an animal! I'm leaving, I'm leaving. That's an animal," during Balkum's arraignment.
Balkum is accused of repeatedly hitting Bruner in the head and upper body with his fists, causing her death, according to the criminal complaint."She would do anything for anybody, truly,” McLamore said. “Give the shirt off her back." Five days before Bruner’s death, Balkum’s attorney argued during a pre-trial hearing to have the electronic monitoring device removed, and the judge complied.
