William Bushey, 60, is accused of killing Laurie and Brett Robinson and wounding his 85-year-old mother, June Bushey

William Bushey 60, left, is arraigned via video conference in San Diego Superior Court with his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Denis Lainez, on Friday. A Point Loma man accused of shooting three people this week, killing his sister and nephew and wounding his 85-year-old mother, was the subject of two police calls in the days leading up to the violence.

Police said Friday that officers had responded to the home twice since mid-August for family disturbances involving the suspect. Family members called police Aug. 16 and 19 reporting that Bushey was verbally aggressive, yelling and cussing, said police Capt. Matt Dobbs, who heads the department’s Western Division. Bushey at one point told police that he was upset with his living arrangements, Dobbs said.

Under the law, a person can be involuntarily detained on a 72-hour psychiatric hold if they are a danger to themselves or others based on a mental disability, or are gravely disabled.A little before 4 p.m. Wednesday, several people, including the suspect, called 911 to report the shooting, San Diego police homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said in a news release.

But then Crowden saw her friend of 42 years, June, walking down the street bleeding heavily. Both women garden — Crowden often trades her beets to June in exchange for figs and green beans — and Crowden figured June must have injured herself while pruning. Crowden believes June was in shock because she didn’t respond to Crowden’s shouts asking if she was OK and what happened.Officers arrived at the home to find June Bushey walking toward the street.

San Diego police gather on Zola Street near Chatsworth Boulevard as they investigate a fatal shooting in the area Wednesday afternoon. Two people died and a third was injured in the incident. Deputy Public Defender Denis Lainez said Bushey denied all allegations against him but submitted to being held in county jail without bail. Lainez said Bushey has a chronic medical condition that would require treatment by jail staff but did not elaborate.
