The M.E.N's Lyell Tweed gets an insight into what it's like to be a bus driver
Since passing my driving test what feels like a lifetime ago my reliable little motor has been a 0.9L engine bright yellow Peugeot 107. It's squeezed me into parking spaces most could only dream of accessing, around turns that looked like a lost cause, and many other tight holes.
Thankfully, I fit into the chair, but sitting bolt upright in a seat with a horizontal steering wheel was just one of the multitude of things different to my little 107. My foot was pushing down on the brake with all the force of my body as I tried my best to make no sudden movements and send the photographer flying.
I brought it back to a steady stop and all I wanted to do was go again, maybe this is what I'm made for, my destiny. I'm already practicing my best "£2 please mate" and "you're welcome, have a nice day" in the mirror for preparation. The Skills Bootcamp, run by Realise, puts people through a 16 week course, which can be done without any experience, and could lead to a role making £28,000 per year as a starting point.
"With franchising coming there are probably more than 1,000 drivers needed across the region," Gregg said. "But it's not just at Go North West and Stagecoach, there are many operators beyond that in other parts of the country too that need drivers. The 'mythbusting' involves making it clear what the shift patterns are, which does involve weekend and evening shifts. However, the job can be very flexible, Mr Scott added, and doesn't just involve driving public buses, but can include school buses and other coaches.
