IT WAS a warm summer day and, while visiting my sister-in-law in San Francisco with my wife and son, we boarded the boat across the bay to Alcatraz. This former penitentiary, now run by the National Parks Service, once housed some of the most dangerous convicts in America.
During our tour we were invited to spend a few moments in the punishment cell. As the door closed behind us, we were plunged into total darkness. When we emerged back into the light, the guide told us errant prisoners might spend as long as five days in that place. I recall thinking I could never survive one day, let alone five. Two weeks later I found myself in an underground cell somewhere in Beirut.
