KUALA LUMPUR: Independent men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi survived a scare before reaching the second round of the Malaysian Open on Tuesday (Jan 10).

World No. 7 Yew Sin-Ee Yi had to dig deep before prevailing 21-13, 20-22, 21-15 over China's world No. 27 Ren Xiangyu-Tan Qiang in their opening match at the Axiata Arena.

The home pair will play Taiwan's world No. 15 Lu Ching-yao-Yang Po-han next for a place in the quarter-finals. There was further joy for the home fans when independent mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie also booked their spot in the second round. World No. 7 Soon Huat-Shevon swept aside Taiwan's Cheng Ko-chi-Lee Chi-chen 21-15, 21-13 to set-up a meeting against China's world No. 1 and favourites Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong.
