Oswaldo Cabrera is returning this season from a fractured ankle that ended his 2024 campaign last May.
It wasn't full speed, but Yankees infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera ran the bases Monday's first full-squad practice, which was his return to the field from a fractured ankle last May.’ first full-squad spring training workout on Monday.
Standing at his Steinbrenner Field locker, the happy-go-lucky, infielder/outfielder excitedly blurted out the highlight of his practice day:This was a first for the Venezuelan switch-hitter since his gruesome season-ending injury last May 3 in Seattle, a fractured left ankle with ligament tears from his slide into home plate when he scored a ninth-inning run on a sacrifice fly. Nine and a half months later, Cabrera says he’s completely healthy and “on schedule” to be ready for Opening Day, which is March 26 in San Francisco.“I’m not running full bore because we’re still building it,” Cabrera said. “But if I had to right now, I’m ready.” Maybe, but the Yankees, who open Grapefruit League play on Friday, still plan to take it slow this spring with Cabrera. It’s too soon to know if Cabrera will be an option for the start of the season. “I don’t know,” Boone said. “I’m not sure when we’ll debut him in games. What that looks like depends here over the next couple of weeks. So we’ll see.”Shortstop Anthony Volpe took his first post-labrum surgery practice swings on Monday and right-handed starter Cam Schlittler has been cleared to throw a bullpen on Tuesday after being limited to flatground tosses for a week due to back inflammation and left lat discomfort. The Schlittler news seemingly confirms the Yankees correctly believed his issues were minor and shouldn’t prevent him from beginning the season in the rotation. “He was built up pretty good and we didn’t shut him down at all, so he was still doing his flat ground when we took him off the mound,” Boone said of Schlittler. “I don’t think we thought it was a big issue, but more of one we wanted to get in front of, just in case.” Volpe won’t be ready for Opening Day. He’s probably looking at a May return from a left labrum injury that occurred last May when he felt a pop diving for a ball at short. Two cortisone shots helped him get through the season without an injury-list stint, but he hit a career-worst .212 and led AL shortstops with 19 errors. As for Cabrera, the Yankees were thrilled to see him back on the field. He’s a favorite in the clubhouse and with fans because he’s so friendly and upbeat. “It’s been a long road coming back from obviously a serious injury,” Boone said. “You know how Oswald attacks that and just how he attacks life. He ends up making everyone else feel better about it, especially in the early days of the injury. “So it’s good to see him. The fact that he’s doing everything now is encouraging and hopefully he continues to get that last layer of maneuverability. But it’s always good when he’s around and he obviously brings a lot to the table for us.”Randy is a native of Jeannette, Pa., a city 25 miles east of Pittsburgh, and has been writing about sports since age 15 when he was covering high schools and Pitt football for the Jeannette News-Dispatch.
