The New York Yankees have a clear need in the infield while the New York Mets suddenly need a starting pitcher. A trade could benefit both sides.
The New York Yankees tried trading Marcus Stroman in the offseason, but no deal had been made by the time spring training rolled around. The whole situation has created some tension between Stroman and the Yankees, even leading Stroman to say he does not believe he is competing for a starting job.
Stroman has already noted that he will not pitch out of the bullpen if asked. The Yankees may be desperate enough to deal Stroman, and find a potential upgrade over DJ LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera, that they could trade him to their crosstown rivals. Sports Illustrated's Michael Brauner suggested the New York Mets could give the Yankees Brett Baty, who does not have a clear path to the big leagues.'Baty has demonstrated he has the ability, but perhaps it's a mental block and a change of scenery could serve him well,' wrote Brauner. 'The Yankees' foe in Queens has also had some extremely bad injury luck thus far to an already thin rotation, losing Frankie Montas for the foreseeable future and now having ace Sean Manaea go down with an injury putting his Opening Day status in doubt as well.'Montas is sidelined with a lat injury while Manaea recently joined him with an oblique injury. Both starters are now in jeopardy of missing opening day. Stroman found great success with the Mets from 2019-2021. He had a 3.21 ERA in 44 starts. The two-time All-Star could be a great addition for the Mets while giving the Yankees a potential option to deploy at third base.Baty was the Mets No. 2 prospect in 2022 and 2023. He has not faired well in the big leagues, but may still be an upgrade over LeMahieu and Cabrera. Both hit below .250 last season, with LeMahieu carrying an awful .204 average.Baty does not have a clear role on the Mets next season with Mark Vientos at third base. His .273/.368/.531 slash line in Triple-A last season could be reason for the Yankees to take a chance on him.More MLB: Mets Sign Veteran Starting Pitcher to Minor League Contract Amid Injury Woes
