Here are updates on all nine Yankees who are on the injured list.
Yankees ace Gerrit Cole is back throwing while fellow pitchers Fernando Cruz, Ryan Yarbrough and Jonathan Loaisiga are progressing toward returning from the injured list. For the first time in more than four months — 158 days to be exact — Cole made his first tosses since his Tommy John surgery.
Cole had a poor second spring training start facing the Twins on March 6 in Tampa – he was roughed up for six runs over 2 2/3 innings – then experienced discomfort after the outing. That led to an MRI and then season-ending surgery on March 22. Here is more on Cole’s first day of throwing plus updates on the eight other Yankees on the injured list:Cole’s first day of throwing after Tommy John surgery was 10 light tosses on flat ground Monday. “I’m excited for him,” manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s done a good job with rehab. This is one of those cool markers along the way that you know is significant to hit.”Schmidt stated in a July 28 interview that his Tommy John surgery was not a full reconstruction. Instead, doctors inserted an internal brace that potentially could shorten his return timeline from around 18 months to 11-to-13 months.Yarbrough threw a two-inning live BP at Somerset on Saturday and will begin a rehab assignment on Thursday, probably at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees are unsure how many rehab outings Yarbough will make because they don’t know yet if they want to build him up to a be a starter or bring him back as a long reliever. He excelled in both roles before his injury. “With Yarbrough, it just depends on how much we want to build him up,” Boone said. “When do we grab him? Do we keep building him up? We’ll see what we’re dealing with , how he’s doing. There’s no set on when we’re going to do that yet.”Cruz threw a 19-pitch live BP on Saturday at Double-A Somerset that, according to Boone, “went well.” Next for Cruz are at least two and probably three rehab outings: Thursday and Sunday and likely the following Tuesday in a Scranton road game or Somerset home game. “Then he’ll be in play potentially,” Boone added.Loaisiga told NJ Advance Media on Monday that he’s been playing catch pain free and that he’s scheduled to progress to throwing a bullpen later this week. He hopes to be off the IL in about 10 days, but it will be a bit longer if the Yankees want him to pitch in a couple minor-league games before activating him.Almost two months in his rehab, Cousins probably is will being a throwing program in late October or early November if everything goes smoothly.Rosario hopes to be back when he’s first eligible from an injury that occurred last Friday when he crashed into the right-field wall. “I started running real fast to catch that ball, I didn’t calculate the distance correctly and then I hit the wall hard,” Rosario said on Aug. 10.Out of his cast recently, Cabrera has been walking around the Yankees clubhouse the last few days with a slight limp.
