The alleged driver who went the wrong way on I-71 early Friday morning and caused a fatal crash was located several hours later, according to a crash report.

Police said the crash happened just after 2 a.m. on I-71 near East Broad Street. Video released by the Ohio Department of Transportation through a public records request showed a black Chrysler Town & Country traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

The Chrysler then struck a blue Ford F-150 and a tractor-trailer. A Ram 1500 slowed down to avoid the previous crash when the truck was rear-ended by another northbound tractor-trailer. The impact ejected the driver of the ram from the truck to underneath the tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer then caught fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A Columbus police crash report said that the driver of the Chrysler was located south of the crash scene and west of I-71 at around 8:04 a.m. He was treated at the hospital for hypothermia. We are not naming the driver because it is unclear whether he is facing charges or will face charges, though the crash report states he fled the crash scene on foot. ODOT Press Secretary Matt Bruning said he believes the Chrysler began traveling in the wrong direction after merging from 670."We have video of them at Cleveland Avenue in 670 going the wrong direction," he said last week.
