A Raritan High School wrestler has been disqualified for two games after punching an opponent following a match. The incident occurred after a match where the wrestler was shoved. The NJSIAA is not taking further action regarding a separate incident that resulted in an injury.
punched an opponentThat punishment is in accordance with a New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association rule that states: “Any coach/player disqualified before, during or after an interscholastic event for unsportsmanlike flagrant verbal or physical misconduct will be disqualified from the next two regularly scheduled games/meets.
”O’Donnell was adamant that a different Raritan wrestler will not be disciplined after the NJSIAA reviewed a separate “legal” incident. That incident resulted in an injury to an Ocean Township wrestler, who was taken to the hospital by ambulance Monday after a medical forfeit. “The NJSIAA was in contact with both schools,” NJSIAA spokesperson Mike Cherenson said. “We can confirm that one wrestler from Raritan High School has received a disqualification for throwing a punch. Based on our review of the incidents, NJSIAA will not be taking any further action against either school.”In a video of the incident, obtained by NJ Advance Media, Perez can be seen pinning Rodriguez in the 138-pound bout and then pushing Rodriguez as Perez stood up at the end of that match. Rodriguez retaliated by punching Perez from behind and striking his face. “He will sit as mandated by the state,” O’Donnell said. “It’s not something we condone. He was pushed at the end of the match, but that is not a reason to get up and punch somebody.”Earlier in the match, Rodriguez lifted Perez and took him down hard to the mat. There was no slam call or intervention by the official. Perez quickly reversed and then pinned Rodriguez. Perez was called for unsportsmanlike conduct by the referee, Owen McClave, after shoving Rodriguez. McClave immediately disqualified Rodriguez after he punched Perez. That punch came minutes after another Ocean Township wrestler was struck in the head and had to leave in an ambulance. O’Donnell said the contact during that match was legal and that Raritan’s Justin Card will not be suspended. O’Donnell disputed allegations by Apicelli that Ocean Township wrestler Kersaint Ganthier was knocked out cold by a punch in the 120-pound bout. Apicelli said Ganthier “went limp” after taking a blow to the face. Ganthier was later transported by ambulance to Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel. He was released late Monday night. “As soon as he gets hit, he goes limp,” Apicelli said. “We started yelling ‘It’s a punch, it’s a punch.’ I think we’re the only people who saw it.”“I was with him the entire time and he never was unconscious,” O’Donnell said. “I was with him the entire time behind the Ocean bench waiting for the ambulance. It’s the reason I didn’t see the punch at 138 pounds. My concern was the Ocean wrestler.” O’Donnell also said he believes Ganthier was originally injured in the first period after an odd fall and roll and not by an alleged punch. “If you watch the video, you see the Ocean wrestler is wobbly at the end of the first period,” O’Donnell said. Video shows that Ganthier rocked back slightly on his heels when called back to the center of the mat for the second period restart. In the second period, video shows Ganthier being struck, seconds after yielding a reversal, by what appears to be a left arm cross-face. The video shows Card’s blow striking Ganthier in the facial area. However, it is not clear whether Card’s hand or arm connected and exactly where the blow struck Ganthier.Wolf said the cross-face “was within the window of being legal.”Apicelli said Tuesday that Ganthier will “be out of the lineup for quite some time.” He said he was not at liberty to disclose any further information on the injury. The two incidents took place in what started as a run-of-the-mill dual meet that Apicelli called “normal.” However, it was far from normal after the bout at 120. McClave penalized Ocean Township twice for unsportsmanlike conduct, at both 138 and 144 pounds, and disqualified Rodriguez after he punched Perez in the face. With an Ocean Township victory locked up after a pin at 157 pounds, Apicelli forfeited the final four bouts.Del Val wrestling gets revenge on No. 16 North Hunterdon with clinical pinning showJoe Zedalis is in his 48th year covering high school sports.
