Regulators in Texas have approved a six-gigawatt (GW) clean air permit for the massive 11-gigawatt Project Matador energy campus.

The US has paved the way for the world’s largest 11-gigawatt private power grid after authorities in Texas recently approved a six-gigawatt Clean Air Permit , the nation’s second-largest to date. Energy developer Fermi America secured the authorization for its Project Matador campus, located near Amarillo, Texas , on February 25.

The 18-million-square-foot facility will be operational by late 2020s to mid-2030s. It is built to be a private hypergrid and will reportedly be powered by four nuclear reactors, natural gas and solar energy. The approval was issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality .The approval signals the project complies with state and federal emissions rules. It also removes the final hurdle to begin the next construction phase of what will become the world’s largest private power grid. Texas clears mega gridWith the air permit now secured, Project Matador, one the of the most ambitious US energy projects in decades, will move into the final steps of securing financing and finalizing tenant agreements. “When it comes to responsible, scalable energy production, it’s no surprise that Texas is leading the way,” Toby Neugebauer, Fermi America CEO and co-founder, pointed out.As the project moves into its next execution phase, the company is preparing to deploy its previously announced fleet of Siemens Energy SGT-800 gas turbines. Six of the units are currently located at the Port of Houston. They will be moved to the Amarillo site.Fermi America said it values Governor Abbott’s leadership, along with the efforts of the State of Texas and the TCEQ. The firm said the review process safeguarded the grid and shielded ratepayers from covering private AI-related power costs. “And we are grateful for the incredible support of the Amarillo community, where we look forward to adding thousands of jobs and billions of dollars to the region’s economy,” Neugebauer continued.World’s largest private gridThe approval follows a rigorous review process, including technical evaluation by TCEQ engineers, air quality modeling and a public comment period. It affirms the project meets state and federal air quality standards. It is designed to safeguard public health and the environment.Following further analysis, environmental experts disclosed they expect Project Matador to ultimately support up to 11 GW of clean natural gas capacity, which the company plans to pursue.“Securing the second largest Clean Air Permit in the country is yet one more significant milestone for our 11 GW private grid campus,” Cathy Landtroop, Fermi America’s Chief Communications Officer and director of strategic initiatives, said.“With the issuance of today’s air permit, the support of our fellow West Texans, and Toby’s foresight to lock up over two GW of long lead time power assets, Fermi is uniquely positioned to help America’s hyperscalers quickly secure the private power they need at scale,” Landtroop concluded in a press release. As per Fermi America, Project Matador comes at a critical time, as US electricity demand surges due to AI, advanced manufacturing, electrification, supply chain reshoring, EV growth, defense upgrades, and the expanding digital economy.
