Singapore-backed tests have delivered the world’s first full certification of automatic air-to-air refueling on the Airbus A330 MRTT.

Singapore has helped Airbus clear a major aviation milestone, pushing automated refueling from trials into certified service. On Tuesday, Airbus confirmed that Spain’s National Institute for Aerospace Technology approved full certification of Automatic Air-to-Air Refuelling, or A3R, on the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport after years of testing with Singapore’s air force.

The move marks what Airbus calls the world’s first full certification of an automatic refueling system on an operational tanker aircraft, setting a new benchmark for military aviation.Certification clears automated refueling for operationsThe approval was issued following a qualification and flight-test campaign conducted with the Republic of Singapore Air Force and the Defense Science and Technology Agency. Tests were flown in both Spain and Singapore and covered a wide range of mission profiles. With certification complete, Singapore’s A330 MRTT fleet, operated by the RSAF’s 112 Squadron, becomes the first in the world to use automatic refueling as a standard capability. Airbus said the campaign confirmed the system’s maturity, safety, and reliability during real-world operations.“The certification of A3R with Singapore is a significant achievement and a clear demonstration of what a long-term partnership can deliver,” said Mike Schoellhorn, Chief Executive Officer at Airbus Defense and Space.“Singapore has consistently led the adoption and co-development of next-generation aerospace technologies, and Airbus is proud to support the RSAF and DSTA in fielding a capability that will shape the future of air-to-air refueling.”Day and night refueling now possibleFor Singapore, the certification brings an immediate operational benefit. According to DSTA, the MRTT fleet can now conduct automatic refueling missions in both daylight and nighttime conditions, increasing flexibility during extended operations.“Achieving full certification of A3R is a significant achievement as Singapore’s A330 MRTTs can now perform automatic refueling both in daytime and at night. DSTA worked very closely with the RSAF and Airbus to advance innovation, enhance safety, and reduce crew workload,” stated Ng Chad-son, Chief Executive, Defense Science and Technology Agency in a statement.“This attainment showcases effective technology integration and sets a new benchmark on automatic aerial refueling globally.”Air-to-air refueling typically takes place at altitudes above 20,000 feet, where precision and crew workload are critical factors for safety. How A3R changes tanker operationsThe A3R system relies on automation and computer vision to detect, track, and connect with receiver aircraft without manual input from the operator. Airbus says this approach lowers workload, improves precision, and reduces the risk of human error during complex refueling maneuvers.By automating the process, tanker crews can focus on mission oversight rather than constant manual control. Airbus added that this also allows greater operational flexibility when supporting different aircraft types during long-range missions measured in hundreds or even thousands of miles. The system was developed under Airbus’s SMART MRTT vision, which aims to introduce more digital and automated features into tanker operations.Trials with fighters prove mission readinessThe joint effort between Airbus, RSAF, and DSTA began in 2020. The certification program included day and night sorties, expanded flight envelopes, and multiple receiver aircraft types to ensure full readiness.During flight trials, the RSAF provided its A330 MRTTs along with F-16 and F-15 fighter jets as receiver aircraft. These tests validated the system across a range of speeds, altitudes, and mission scenarios.Major-General Kelvin Fan, Chief of Air Force at the Republic of Singapore Air Force, added: “The RSAF is pleased to have partnered with DSTA and Airbus in pioneering the world’s first A3R capability. This development will enhance the RSAF’s aerial refueling operations, contributing to greater operational effectiveness. It also reflects the RSAF’s commitment to working with industry partners to innovate and remain at the leading edge of technology.”
